I view psychotherapy as an opportunity to reach intellectual and emotional balance. Through uncovering the barriers that prevent us from reaching our potential we can become our true self. Psychotherapy can allow us to gain insight into a better understanding of ourselves and others, can teach us how to deal with and express emotions. It is a process that can enable us to learn new, more constructive ways of dealing with difficulties, and more enjoyable ways of relating to others and ourselves. It is a way to uncover clarity of our past, present, and future which can lead to peace of mind and wisdom of oneself and life.
My psychodynamic and psychoanalytic orientations give me a deeper understanding of dynamics of my patients' problems. Incorporating mind-body techniques enhances and enables the therapeutic process where the talk therapy has its limits. Both combined enable deep and comprehensive healing and growth. In a supportive and comfortable atmosphere I work towards helping them to gain control of their life, become aware of the cause of the problem, and find a way to change, accept or see things in different perspective.
I specialize in treatment of PTSD, complex PTSD, and single event traumas. In my work I incorporate Attachment Focused Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy EMDR and modified protocols: Flash Technique, IADC treatment for grief, and Havening Techniques®. These are non-traditional methods designed to allow the patient to process traumatic or distressing memories. These approaches are intended for allowing the patient to experience deep and accelerated processing of material (painful thoughts, feelings, experiences caused by past, present, or future) that may be inaccessible in traditional talk therapy. While it’s not possible to provide any guarantees, these psychosensory therapies have been shown to be effective to treat trauma, addiction, anxiety disorders, chronic pain, panic, and somatizations.
I received bachelor and master’s degrees in clinical psychology from John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, Poland. I graduated Summa Cum Laude with GPA 4.0. I continued to develop my clinical skills at Fordham University, Long Island University, John Jay College, and the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy, two-year postgraduate program, where in 2010 I received a Certificate in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. I completed extensive training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing treatment (levels 1,2,3-trained by Laurel Parnell). I am also a NYS Credentialed Alcoholism, Substance Abuse and Gambling Counselor, NYS Licensed Mental Health Counselor, and a Certified Havening Practitioner.
I started my clinical practice in an outpatient substance abuse clinic in Brooklyn that focused on cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic approach in helping individuals suffering from addiction and co-dependency. Subsequently I worked in an outpatient mental health clinic in Manhattan that specializes in psychotherapy of posttraumatic stress disorder and related mood disorders in psychoanalytic approach. Currently I maintain a full-time private practice, I am a founder and director of Katarzyna Dlugosz Mental Health Counseling, PLLC.
I have had 20 years of my own personal psychotherapy in various modalities (individual and group) and theoretical orientations: CBT, Psychodynamic, Psychoanalytic, Psychodrama, Energy (Meditation, Reiki), and Mind-Body work (EMDR, Hypnosis, Havening). I had 15 years of weekly group and individual supervision in psychoanalytic, psychodynamic, and mind-body perspective, currently I consult other professionals on as needed basis. I continue to develop my clinical skills and understanding in ongoing trainings, workshops, seminars, and conferences.
I work best with intelligent and self aware patients, who have prior experience of being in therapy. I am a good match for patients who are in their 40s, 50s, and 60s.

I view therapy as a mirror that you use to see yourself. As your therapist, I believe that I’m also immensely benefitting from observing your interactions with this mirror. In seeing how you are using the mirror to come closer to your true self, I often find myself appreciating your perspective of the world.
I find my approach to therapy aligns the most with psychodynamic theories, person-centered theory, and Internal Family Systems. Of course, you will be my best teacher in letting me know how to best work with you. This means that I strive to honor the uniqueness of your journey. We will work together to create a space where all parts of you are welcomed, and you can be heard without being judged. I want to uncover with you how your past shapes your present; and I want to explore how your relationship to yourself shapes your relationship with others. While talk therapy may at times present its limits, I also invite you to flourish your creativity in your healing.
Something that highlights my own struggle is being unique and common at the same time. Being born and raised in mainland China, educated in Singapore, Los Angeles, and Chicago, and now working in New York, I experienced a shift from being similar to many to being similar to few. “Foreign” is a feeling that underlies many emotional experience, and I want to provide a safe space for you be with your emotions, to see through the foreign feeling. I received my bachelor’s degrees in neuroscience and psychology from University of California, Los Angeles. I continued to pursue a master’s degree in mental health counseling at Northwestern University. I’m currently also enrolled in the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy for a post-graduate psychodynamic training.

Sometimes, coping can become exhausting and dull. Maybe what you have been doing is not working anymore, or you are looking for a place to start. When you are overwhelmed with issues of anxiety, struggling in your interpersonal relationships, or with your own identity and sexuality, with no relief, it is time to try something different. I believe so much of the therapeutic process finds success through connection and self-awareness. I aim to co-create a comfortable and open space to explore these challenges and to honor and support you in your decision to prioritize your mental health.
I incorporate an integrative approach to therapy, prioritizing holistic, compassionate, person-centered, and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy. I tailor my approach depending on the needs of my clients. I have experience working with the LGBTQ+ community, people in life transition, and issues of anxiety and depression.
I enjoy bringing non-traditional elements into the therapeutic space, incorporating my training in yoga, movement and somatic bodywork. These often complement traditional behavioral approaches and solution-focused treatment. The journey is yours, and I am grateful to help you find relief and power in reclaiming your experience.

It takes so much courage to reach out for help! If you need support, I would love to come alongside you. I operate from a strength-based perspective and utilize trauma-informed methods to help individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, loss, and trauma. My goal is to empower you, to work collaboratively, and to help you process your challenges in a safe way. In my work I incorporate EMDR, Narrative Exposure Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and CBT. I am passionate about watching people reach their full potential and be set free from anything that hinders that. I also provide integrative spiritual and biblical care for all of those who are interested in having this aspect incorporated into their care.
I utilize different treatment types based on a client-centered approach. This is a collaborative process with the client. Thus we will work together on a plan that is right for you. You will experience growth and change at your own pace, and take control of your life and joy.
I work with people struggling with depression, anxiety, intrusive thoughts, or interpersonal traumas. Initially, we will meet to figure out what the client needs and what treatment methods best fit their situation, personality, and comfort levels. I’m a counselor who is just beginning my practice with adults, and I’m here to offer a space where you feel genuinely heard and understood. With a background in social work and experience as a victim advocate for survivors of domestic and sexual violence, I bring a strong sense of advocacy into my work as a clinical mental health counselor. My approach is client-centered and eclectic; I draw from CBT to provide practical skills for daily challenges and psychodynamic techniques to explore how past experiences might shape what’s happening now.
I believe deeply in creating a safe, supportive environment where you can share openly and feel validated at every step. I’m working toward EMDR certification to expand how I can support you, especially if past traumas are affecting your life. Unconditional positive regard is at the core of my practice; my goal is for you to feel respected and cared for without judgment.
My specialties include helping clients with anxiety, depression, self-esteem, relationship issues, abuse, trauma, and PTSD, along with developing coping skills like mindfulness and meditation. You can expect a compassionate, culturally sensitive, goal-oriented, and strengths-based experience with me in the session. As a Black woman, I strive to offer safety and kindness to everyone I come across, especially other women of color and minorities.
I tend to work best with clients who are open-minded, reflective, and open to deep processing but are also ready to put in the work to move forward and make meaningful progress. Your journey is uniquely yours, and I’m here to help you navigate it in a way that feels empowering, whether that’s unpacking complex emotions, addressing anxieties, or exploring new ways to cope and heal.

As a cancer survivor, I hold a passion for working with individuals navigating an illness, as well as their caregivers. I have also worked with grief, depression, anxiety, personality disorders, trauma disorders, OCD, learning disabilities, and developmental disabilities amongst others.

My theoretical orientation is cognitive-behavioral based, psychodynamic based, person-centered based, and humanistic based, amongst others. I utilize a variety of modalities stemming from the aforementioned as well as mind and body techniques, listening skills, Rogerian notions, Alderian methods, Socratic methods, solution-focused techniques, existential frameworks, dialectal-behavioral skills, and polyvagal methods.
